Item DetailsTitle: Bwa Koro / Bobo warrior dancer statue fetish - Mali - African Art Tribal Art Item Category: Statue, warrior, fetish, dance Date/Period: Mid 20th century Origin: Mali Materials: Wood, fabric Dimensions: 23,62 Inch Weight: 3,75 Pounds Note: Stand not included. Additional Information: This type of realization is found only among the Bwa located in Mali on the Tominian plateau.
They are the representation of a dancer who wears a mask of leaves which in essence is ephemeral since it is composed of a net of vegetable fibers, all surmounted by an ornament of feathers.
The costumes do not survive beyond the dance day.
They can only be carried with the sap still present in the plants.
They are the embodiment of the Do, of nature's ability to regenerate itself with each season.
In the Bwa culture, there is a real duality between these plant creations which by the ephemeral refer not to a circumscribed temporality but to a metaphysical notion of a precisely timeless force capable of renewing itself by its very essence.
On the contrary, wooden creations symbolize the culture of men.
It is therefore a bridge between these two entities.
The leaf mask is not only used in fertility rites but also for village purification.
Their extrapolation into fetishes makes it possible to confer this capacity on the village to be reborn by itself, to purify itself, but within a conceptual framework apprehensible for the culture of men.
There are therefore few examples of these fetishes since they do not fall within the framework of annual festivals, or initiation rites of young people.
