Buyu, Boyo, Basumba statue - DRC, Congo - African Art Tribal Art
Item Details
Description
  • Title: Buyu, Boyo, Basumba statue - DRC, Congo - African Art Tribal Art
  • Item Category: Figure, statue, ancestor
  • Date/Period: Mid 20th century
  • Origin: DRC, Congo
  • Materials: Wood
  • Dimensions: 12,6 Inch
  • Weight: 0,88 Pounds
  • Note: Stand not included.
  • Additional Information: The angular face, which a thin beard collar delineates, is specific to the statues of ancestors Basumba, one of the six Boyo clans. The high, muscular legs, extended by massive feet, concentrate all the dynamics of this powerful work. According to Daniel Biebuyck, the widespread use of ancestor figures is the result of the presence of pre-Bembe hunters among these groups living on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika.
Migratory flows mixed within the same territories of Bembe , Lega, Buyu (Buye) or Boyo , Binji and Bangubangu. The Bembe and Boyo traditions are relatively similar. They worship the spirits of nature, water specifically among the Boyo, but also the heroic ancestors, whose will is sought through divinatory rites. The hunt is also an opportunity to make sacrifices in gratitude to the entities from which one has begged for favor and protection. Their masks are rare and their function little documented.
